Category: accessible Devices
If anyone uses one and would be willing to explain how to get started, the key layout, etc., I'd really appreciate it.
I just bought a dm-620 model on Ebay. It came with no accessories, and I'm having trouble finding much in the way of useful info about how to set it up. Can someone offer a few tips, please?
Also, I'm curious to know what the differences are between the 520, 620 and 720 models, because that's not very clear, based on the description on the Olympus site. If i need to get the newer one, I will, but I'm not sure if that's necessary.
Thanks.
Probably best to have a sighted friend come over and help you with learning the buttons. Also if you can plug it into your computer you could look at how the file system is laid out.
I heard the 720 is accessible. The buttons have speech when pressed but not for sure.
Yes, I ended up replacing it with a 720. The 720 is accessible immediately, no sighted help needed! It prompts you to select speech and tells you which buttons to press, to do initial setup.
How intelligible is the speech?
I had an Olympus DS 50 back in the day. The voice guidance feature was actually quite good, easy to understand and access. Only thing it didn't read were the file names within the folders, if I recall. Microphone also wasn't great for anything on a more professional level. But boy was it a handy little device. I wonder how the newer ones perform in comparrison. I use a Zoom H4 for all my recording now, and while it's amazing and fantastic, it's also a bigger beast, and not accessible in the least.
The speech is a clear, easy to understand female British voice.
My speech broke on me. I have an LS 7. I am considering a LS14 because I
need one for my journalism stuff.
